Endodontics (Root Canal Therapy)
Endodontic treatment, commonly known as Root Canal Therapy is the treatment of infections of the dental pulp which can then save the natural tooth. The pulp of the tooth consists of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue and the infection is generally brought on by severe tooth decay which infects the nerve. The harmful bacteria that are able to reach the nerve result in an infection and decay which may cause pain, oversensitivity and/or facial swelling. Without treatment, the infection of the dental pulp can spread to the bone around the tooth causing it to be destroyed. This can make the tooth very mobile and lead to pathological changes.
Treatment involves removing the infected pulp through a tiny access cavity in the crown of the tooth. The area surrounding and containing the pulpal tissue is carefully cleaned, sterilised and filled with a permanent filling material to prohibit any further infection and discomfort.
