Bridges

A bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth by attaching an artificial tooth between two crowns that are affixed to the natural teeth (abutments) on either side of the existing gap.

A bridge is an ideal solution for filling gaps where teeth are missing and restoring your original beautiful smile as they are custom crafted to fit the shape or size of your existing teeth. Once a bridge is cemented it cannot be removed or flop about as can happen with a partial denture. Often the colour can be customised to improve appearance of your smile. Bridges can improve chewing ability and thus aid in digestion, help stabilise the occlusion (bite), prevent tilting or drifting of the teeth and often improve speech.

The procedure usually takes two visits.

At the initial appointment a small portion of the enamel and/or existing filling is removed from each abutment tooth. An impression is then taken and sent to the specialist ceramics laboratory where your new custom designed bridge is made. A temporary bridge is placed to protect the remaining tooth structure and maintain the stability of the occlusion while the final bridge is being fabricated.

At the second appointment the bridge is then checked for aesthetics, occlusal harmony, function and fit before being cemented over the remaining tooth preparations.

Bridges require a commitment to regular oral hygiene using specialised flossing techniques which your dentist will demonstrate for you.

If you have missing teeth ask the professional team at Dental Excellence for a consultation and the dentist will be able to provide you with further details and treatment options suited specifically to your needs.
